The one I used to own [1000watt] was no problem. As I recall:
Run at the same rpm as what is on the generator nameplate [1800 or 3600rpm I
guess- depends on how many poles].
Don't connect to load, until engine is warmed [at least 2 minutes].
If you have started engine quickly after a mains failure, then shut of any
refrigerator or freezer and leave it off at least 10 minutes, so the internal
gas pressure drops off. Get a couple of lights going [eg standard or reading
lamps, that you can lug about the house]. Watching the brightness of those
lamps, gives a clue as to how the generator is coping.
Preferably, run out flexible cords to the lights, TV whatever DO NOT power up
the house wiring. Maybe not real convenient but maybe you will live a bit
longer.
If there is more than one frig/ freezer to be supplied then after powering up
the first, wait ten mins or so before switching in the next. This will reduce
the momentary overload on your B&S engine. In fact, having a frig running
sweetly gives a temporary boost to accelerate the second incoming compressor.
Place engine outdoors, on leeward side. NOT in basement or garage.
Have firefighting gear handy, know exactly what you plan to do when the gas
runs out. DO NOT add gas to a running engine.
IF you insist on tinkering with the house wiring, then have an action plan
written out, like first open all switches and remove the main fuses and give
those fuses in care to a reliable adult with instructions like "These *must*
stay in your pocket until-
1............., and
2.............."
Cheers......ALEC
