I had a CO who had been a survivor of the Bataan Death March. He once told us
that, during their imprisonment in Japan, there were some Japanese guards who
shared their food rations with the POWs, at least to the extent that they
could.
If you saw the piece done about Lou Zamperini during the Olympics finale, he
also made the statement that not all of the prison guards were sadistic
monsters, although some obviously were. If I recall correctly, he also said
that some of them shared their limited rice rations with the POWs from time
to time.
