here is a table of possible antenna choice that indicates the best antenna
for receiving at a specified distance.
The best antenna for DX would be a vertical with a good ground plane, but
compromises have to be made, specially when you live in a condominium!
Path length (km) radiation angle most suitable antenna
0-200 60-90 degrees Hor. dipole 0.25 wavelength
above ground.
200-500 40-70 degrees Hor. dipole 0.3 wavelength
above ground.
500-1000 25-50 degrees 0.24 wavelength vertical
o-
10-20 degrees nopole 0.5 wavelength above
ground.
1000-2000 10-30 degrees Vertical monopole 0.3 wave-
and low angles length long with ground-
screen.
2000-3000 5-15 degrees Vertical monopole 0.3 wave-
20-30 degrees length long.
3000 and more low angles Vertical monopole up to 0.6
wavelength long with ground
screen.
I have a Sony AN-1, but the results are bad, and I use it only with a
portable receiver.
I think the best active antenna is the HE-011 from Rohde & Schwarz, but the
price is verry high (DEM 980).
For DX I using 2 longwire antennas (about 15m) in two different directions,
and each longwire is coupled with the magnetic longwire balun from HF
ystems.
After all experiments with antennas I have with this combination the best
results.
