Take two I guess. Call waiting and all that. Anyway, The point that I
was trying to make was that the diver in question should keep in mind
that all of these people in the medical and SCUBA field are only
interested in seeing SAFE participation in the sport and that they are
not the "enemy." Given this on e must still question the absolute role
of medical approval before a fully informed adult can make a descision
for themself regarding the acceptable level of risk that they are
willing to take concerning an activity they desire to do.
The concept where an organization or government has the right to
prohibit an activity based on looking out for the well being of the
participent is called paternalism. Seat belt laws and such reflect a
level of paternalism by the government that has proven to be veryu
controversial and I think there is some of that going on here. I am not
trying to rock the proverbial boat but it is worth some thought about
the role of the medical professional in the certification process and
exactly where to draw the liability line and let an adult think and act
for themselves. Anyway I am more playing devils advocate than anything
else and am just trying to spark some conversation.
Be wet and well.
