| subject: | X and Netscape in 60+meg |
I've got a mini-Linux with X, Netscape v3.04, and other GUI apps working here and a GUI destop at 800x600. Almost the worst possible machine to try this on, a Pentium 5 at 60mhz no less. It works. Netscape v3.04 (in this setup) is the slowest GUI browser I've seen since I tried NewDeal's SKIPPER on an old 80286 (which was even slower). The displayed colors are wrong for the most part but the displays are useable and readable enough. Funny part is this took over 60 meg of hard drive to do and 32meg of that is the VM swapfile. A very small install at roughly 28 meg but to be honest I prefer my other 10 meg install using only the CLI. If browing with Netscape is _this_ bad I don't need the GUI. The WWW is the only reason I can think of to even use X windows. I really don't need it often for anything else. The point was to see if it would work and it does. I'm impressed and relieved that most of the person's creating these 'mini installs' aren't just bags of hot-air. Meanwhile I'm having some fun with the LINKS browser here. :-) > > , , > o/ Charles.Angelich \o , > __o/ > / > USA, MI < \ __\__ ___ * ATP/16bit 2.31 * ...
