You have a choice, you can save up before you purchase it or after you purchase it. Your brother in law is saving up after he has purchased. The advantage of borrowing is that you get the goods now. The advantage of saving up before hand is that it is about half the price. Compare $x a month * n months against the list price. A possible way to reduce his debt is to keep his car for 4 years rather than 2. Put the payments for years 3 and 4 into a savings account. Then buy his new car out right. Keep the savings scheme going for the replacement car.
