Mike,
What do you mean by 'setting up' the generator? There's usually not much to
do with a portable generator except fuel it and go. Important points:
It should be obvious that it needs to have good ventilation; I can't believe
how many folks try to run them in the basement and die because of carbon
monoxide poisoning. Don't ever fuel it while it's running, of course, and
watch the oil level carefully. (another good reason to shut it down while
fueling) Keep it right up to the 'full' mark on oil if you want it to last.
It's best to run extension cords to the appliances you need to operate with
the generator, being careful of the current draw and especially starting
load. Many well pumps won't start on a normal home-sized generator and will
burn out the motor if you try.
