Dozens of DOS laptops needed in South Pacific: Christian Duretete, WO1V, of Key
Largo, Florida, is seeking obsolete DOS laptop computers to equip a
solar-powered keyboarding classroom in a developing country--Kiritimati Island
(also known as Christmas Island) in Kiribati. "I'm back from running a pilot
project with a few 8086 through 80286s running DOS 3.30 and a very old
typing-teaching application," he said. "There was lots of interest from the
senior high students who had never put a finger on a keyboard!" The new school
year starts in February, and Duretete says he's desperate to locate a supply of
these older units at "a friendly price." He would prefer 8086s
with monochrome
screens. Dead batteries are welcome, and a hard drive is not a necessity
either. He's also looking for factory-reject, unframed solar panels. Contact
Christian Duretete via e-mail, wo1v{at}arrl.net, if you can help.
