As to what type of jacket to buy it depends if you want one that is spicific 
to cycling or not. The cycling jacket is longer in the back so that when your 
leaning forward it will still cover your butt. There are models that have 
velcro on the butt piece that can be velcroed to make the butt piece short if 
you want to use the jacket for walking. As for material look for something 
that is breathable such as Goretex which is a thin membrane between the nylon 
or polyester fabric that breath, but does not let in water. If the jacket 
does not let in air you'll be wet with sweat. Look for underarm openings. 
This is usually zippered  and can be opened for ventilation. Try on the hood 
and see how well your vision is around. Any obstruction caused by the jacket 
should have you look for a new jacket. Colors are important. The Brighter the 
more you can be seen by car drivers.
