CS> Sorry but no. The traditional geisha isnt even remotely a prostitute.

 PS: to this. Memory serves:

In a house of any repute, if an apprentice is found to have had sex
with a client she is banned immediately.

In a house of Good repute (making a lot of money by the rules)
however a valued Geisha who is found to have had sex with a client-
will be able to afford to keep it quiet. If she has become pregnant
she can always claim rape and this can happen)- the pregnancy will
be terminated, or if the child is born and is a male may be adopted
by the father as a son of one of his concubines. If a girl- she would
be risen b the house (the women who live there) as a future Geisha or
sent out to an orphanage.

To be specific yes the "Traditional" Geisha is simply a woman who
entertains men with song, dance and tea ceremony and pleasant
conversation. That is the Tradition.

However as in any culture, traditions have been known to bent, and
sometimes, broken.

How today does one define 'being involved sexually'?

A Geisha could very well be sexually involved with a client without
disturbing her hair or her Kimono or obi. And it would be to serve
the man. How about her own needs you wonder. That's what, in the book
anyway, made her life so tragic.
