Depends on how you look at it..

If the military took one in as either a draftee (back during said times) or
as a volunteer, and trained and tasked them with a particular job or
specialty, there job was important in the grand scheme.

airman playing a support role for our fighters and bombers or air bases,
even the cooks!

However Klahn was no hero if that is how he has been portraying himself if
a hero is defined by someone who was on the lines flying the planes and
