| subject: | Dell Proprietary ATX PS |
Hello, Tom. I'm hoping you can fill me in some more about - - -=> TOM WALKER wrote to JIM HOLSONBACK <=- -> - - Wayne's balky machine is an HP Pavilion 4483, -> or something like that. PS for Dell are another matter, -> and I think Dell somehow changed around the wiring on their ATX -> power connectors for at least some of their machines.. TW> That is correct. They are using a NON standard wiring setup for hte TW> ATX MB power plug. TW> One dan better do a Great Deal of checking before using a NON Dell TW> Power Supply on a Dell MB. Do you have any additional detail info on whether connecting a standard ATX PS will damage the Dell boards, or, conversely, whether connecting a Dell PS will damage standard boards? Also, do you have any details on why Dell deviated from the ATX standard 20-pin power connector pinouts, or as to the actual pinouts they use? And, have they deviated from the ATX pinout standard for ALL of their systems' power supplies? I remember doing some basic troubleshooting and finding one or more Dell PS that didn't work on standard ATX boards, and I saw then that there are some changes on the pinouts - - in particular, I remember that I was looking for two pins which are grounds (black wires) on standard ATX and those pins had different colored wires on the Dell unit. And last week, I happened to see a Dell PS sitting on workbench where I volunteer, and someone had written "DELL ONLY" on it. thanks - - - JimH. ...
