Well, not altogether. The Democrats had their own dark side, until 
Goldwater decided in 1964 that a deal with the devil wasn't such a bad idea.

It is an unfortunate fact that the end of the Roman Republic came at the 
hands of a populist leader. It is also an unfortunate fact that the 
Republicans are looking more and more like the Optimates, and that the 
hundred or so years of war that President Monkey has, in all likelihood, 
committed us to stands all too good a chance of producing another Caesar.
