ANDREW GRILLET was thinking about Punishment and keyed into cyberspace:
AG>Hi Bob,
AG>-=> On 08 May 97 00:57:46 Bob Moylan said to John Hoppman <=-
AG> BM> The only thing that spanking a child, with or without ADD/ADHD
AG> BM> accomplishes is to show that child that if you are bigger and
AG> BM> stronger than someone else you can get usually get away with
AG> BM> inflicting physical pain.
AG>
AG>It certainly teaches that, but that is not the only thing that
AG>is taught, if the smacking is used consistently and in specific
AG>contexts.
AG>As Pavlov showed, the brain is capable of association.
AG>If little Johnny gets his wrist slapped every time he tries to
AG>torture the cat, he will probably asssociate torturing the cat
AG>with slapped wrists. Of course, he may also associate cats and
AG>parents with slapped wrists too.
Only if the child has the ability to truly discern cause and effect. In
the ADHD child, the physical punishment is not associated with the
actions that the abuser feels justifies the abuse.
