Are?  Cigarettes used to be about $2/carton, now they're about $30/carton
(I admit I haven't checked closely, it's one bad habit I don't have - but I have
lots of others to make up for it ) - and the difference is all taxes.

I know a lot of farmers.  Most grow either corn or soybeans (and most switch
crops every couple of years - the field surrounding my house is usually corn but
in 2009 it was soybeans).  AFAIK none of them are getting much if anything from
the Crop Reserve Program (which is the outfit that pays farmers not to grow crops).
There isn't much land around here that is in that program.
