Hello Jonathan !
NC>> ATI? They do the factory fitted/bog standard Mac video hardware. I
JF> think.
JF> Not as of late, though it's stilll not perfect. The Rage Pro chipset
The first lots of the G3 Macs definitely are powered by a wimpy ATI chipset,
bit of a waste really as the CPU is an absolute beast and the ATI is real
slow causing a bit of a bottleneck in the system. :-/
JF> is about 3Dfx-level in performance... but it's a 2D/3D board! I'd
JF> still grab a Voodoo 2 board if I could, but it runs Quake II well
JF> enough. Oh, and that reminds me... there probably won't be a Quake II
JF> for the PSX! :-) It can't handle it as well as a PC can.
Ah. But will Hasbro/Project X get a conversion. I wonder. :)
NC>> Great.
JF> Hey, bump-mapping isn't exactly a quick operation to do. The video
JF> board has to do it for EVERY texture to look right. On the plus side,
JF> it looks very nice indeed.
So what does bump mapping actually mean exactly? :)
NC>> :)
JF> Hey, it's true. Something that bugs a lot of PC gamers is that some
JF> companies are outright stiff and uncaring when it comes to gaming.
JF> Matrox promotes their m3D... because they have to. 3Dfx promotes
JF> their Voodoo 2 chipset because they KNOW it's the fastest on the
JF> block right now.
Great.
NC>> If we had free local calls. Which we ain't got, and
NC>> aren't likely to get very soon either :(
JF> Move to Canada - you'll enjoy it a lot more. You get practically
I'd love to! Ain't it all big mountains, green lush forests and lots of snow
in the winter?
JF> everything game-related (except European software) faster, including
JF> the games themselves and the magazines about them.
Thats a bonus. :) Don't you use NTSC tv over there? (Makes the games run 17%
faster than on the PAL (uk) tv's)
NC>> I ain't played it, still amusing myself with my brother
NC>> Saturn and the few games he bought for it. :)
JF> Give it a shot (especially if you get a "ninja PC," as you Brits call
I think you'll find thats just the very silly writers for the magazines. :)
JF> them); you'll like it. The fun thing is that, unlike most racers,
JF> your craft doesn't handle "a lot like" anything. The best
JF> description would be that of a Jet Ski... combined with a motorcycle,
JF> combined with a grappling hook (which you use to wheel around tight
Sounds like great fun
JF> turns). I would advise trying Jet Moto 2, but I hear the track style
JF> is usually either A) similar to Jet Moto 1, or B) not as fun as Jet
JF> Moto 1.
I've played several jetski games in the arcades, great stuff, bouncing around
all over the place on a moving mechanical jetski. Fun!
NC>> :) In the studio I'm freelancing at they have a P300,
NC>> /just/ a bit nippy. Spends most of the day utilising
NC>> all that power playing FMV clips on the screensaver.
NC>> Great.
JF> Now that really IS a waste of hardware. At least use it for 3D
JF> modeling or high-end graphics work, even if it's just for a fancy
JF> logo!
Web browsing, Toca touring car and the occassional flying lesson in MS Flight
Simulator. Stuart (the owners son) has a steering wheel and footpedal set for
playing the driving games. And he's a real racing driver too, driving a
Budweiser car sometime soon, previously been racing Formula Vauxhall cars.
