Season's Greetings Bob,
CAPTAIN'S LOG Vessel: SV Freestyle
Friday, January 17, 1997
Port: Granville Island
Destination: Snug Cove
09:00 Park land vehicle at Granville Island and step aboard
Freestyle for a 3 hour cruise to Snug Cove. Crew consists
of one frail, subservient-looking woman.
Weather conditions are perfect for this time of year in
Vancouver - dark skies, rain, thin fog, and 5-6 knots of
wind.
09:15 Perfect time for casting off. I expect to head out
against the tide and on a dead run for the next 10 miles.
I command crew to cast off the bow line and she commences
to complain of sea sickness.
09:20 I slap crew hard and snug down Freestyle.
09:30 I return from the Quarterdeck Chandlery with "Queez-Away"
wrist bands and give to crew.
09:45 Cast off and underway. We wave to Coast Guard station as
we motor past.
10:00 Command crew to take helm in order that I may hoist the
sails. I laugh as she comes to the helm. I send her to
mid-ships and command her to raise the main. She requests
that I head to wind. I engage autopilot and slap crew.
10:30 Running wing-on-wing at 5-6 knots. The sails are full and
so are the crew's breasts. I engage autopilot then beat
and rape crew.
11:00 Nothing to report.
12:00 Nothing to report.
13:00 Approaching Snug Cove. Beat crew one last time before
making port.
13:30 Snug down at public wharf and command crew to cook.
14:00 Chili con Tofu is served but slightly tepid. Hold crew's
hand over propane burner. Deep-six pot of chili and
command crew to make proper pot.
15:00 Piping hot chili con tofu is served.
15:15 Chili devoured. Still hungry. Command crew to produce
sandwiches. Crew does not comply. Beat crew unconscious
and step off Freestyle to take in the local scenery.
15:30 Return to Freestyle and catch crew on VHF radio. Switch
off DC supply and eat crew.
15:45 Cast off shorthanded.
16:00 Winds pick up to 15 knots. Decide to furl foresail but
drum jammed. Reef the main, and foresail blows. Drop
foresail and bring out storm gib. Tack on genny is jammed
and cannot be removed. Put storm gib away and stuff genny
down forepeak hatch.
16:15 Drop all sails and switch to auxilliary power.
16:30 Darkness looming and nobody on board to beat.
16:45 In total darkness, I decide to go below for an unknown
reason. Reason becomes evident. I am swooshing in 6
inches of water. I close all seacocks except raw water
intake valve.
17:00 Go back to cockpit and pump out 30 gallons of seawater.
Bilge pump breaks and becomes useless.
17:15 Check water level below. Rising at a rate of 1-2 gallons
per minute. No bucket on board - cause of flooding not
yet determined.
17:20 Check raw water intake valve. In working order. Check
intake through hull. Locate 4 inch giser.
17:25 Make cellular call to Granville Island travel lift. Gone
home. Make call to Granville Island businesses. No pump
to be found.
17:30 Dial *16 for Coast Guard. Make distress call. Switch to
Alpha 22 and await reponse.
17:45 Hailed by CG and informed that the cutter Osprey has been
deployed for rescue.
18:00 Osprey arrives and escorts Freestyle to their docks.
Motoring at 5 knots.
19:00 Arrive at CG station and deploy motored pump. Pump out
70 gallons of sea water and do "quick fix" to through hull.
20:00 Freestyle arrives at her berth on Granville Island and a
cup and bucket is brought on board.
21:00 Bilge is cleaned up and I go to bar for beer.
22:00 Return to Freestyle and bail out 15 gallons of water.
22:30 Go to land vehicle to park closer to boat... gone. Towed.
23:00 Stay on board the night bailing water. Make arrangements
for haul out first thing in morning.
Cheers,
Augustin~~~
