Hi All!
On the radio today (JJJ). There was a segment on the plans
of Telstra to introduce timed local calls for all users of
electronic data transfer. This includes modems, fax machines,
probably eftpos and a mirade of other devcices. According
to the segment, this would be a prelude to all local services
being timed.
There is not as yet any information on the rates that will
apply. Figures from 15 to 75 cents a minute have been
bounded about. Looking at the cheapest rate of say 15 cents
a minute, the average bill for me here would more than
double. And those running a bbs I would expect theirs
could triple or more.
According to Telstra's reports, they lay blame mainly on
internet users for this change. Stating the internet users
are jamming up and over stressing the exchanges.
This reason however fails to staisfy as the hardware to
moniter this change is already i place and has been for
time now. Long before any internet users could cause any
problem. And I as yet have not ever picked up a phone and
not had a dial tone.
One reason given for this introduction is, for Telstra to
try and regain some of its power that it has lost in recent
times. So it can once again control communications in this
country.
At present T cannot charge timed rates on local calls, due
to a communication policy that is in force. This policy is
however up for review in November this year I think. Where
T is confident that it can overturn the regulations regarding
to timed calls. I was not able to get through to anybody
today regarding this, and as to whether the public can have
a say or do anything in regard to the policy. I will
continue to try however.
If T bring this in it will affect everyone from small business
to those who just collect email. Which in the future will affect
anyone who picks up a phone to make a call.
As I said this was announced on the radio this morning just
after 11.00 am, with a couple of interviews and excerts from
T and other sources.
I will post more details of this when I can get through
to anybody and find more out about it.
FlipSide,
Darren.
