To unblock a DosRead on an unnamed pipe from another thread, you close
the handle and DosRead will then return.

To unblock a DosRead on a COM device from another thread, you change
the read timeout and DosRead will then return.

To unblock a DosRead on an *named* pipe from another thread, you close
the handle and DosRead will then return. You can, alternatively (I
believe), use DosSetNPHState to change the pipe from blocking to
  non-blocking mode.
