Well, our Frost Bite series got our first race off. No fog
was going to stop us, and it didn't. (It wasn't there to
stop it, but that's another story)
Anyhow, if was a pleasant 42 or so degrees F, as well as
overcast, as well as rainy. Perfect weather for a sail.
Oh yeah!! The reason we were really out there: The wind at
the start was at 20+ mph and gusting to at least 30!
We had a lot of fun in the pre-start, as there was a question
as to whether we should take in a reef or not. (I've got to
get my new skipper to get things set and deciding what to
do earlier than he has.) Well, once into the wind to check
the settings, we nearly got knocked on our lips. He decided
to reef.
As we had never reefed that boat before, it would have made a
great show for Bleepers, Blunders and Practical Jokes! We
did get it taken in in time before the start. Unfortunately,
I didn't tie it in tight enough. It shook out on one of
the tacks and we had to do it again. Having figured out the
system, that one finally was done properly.
The wind was building at the turning mark and we watched a
couple of faster boats ahead of us have some major problems
with their spinnakers. We didn't set and did quite well for
the next leg. However, the wind dropped and he never got
around to ordering for it. At least we were able to
wing and wing it for awhile.
Not sure of the results as yet, but we didn't do too bad. I
think a 3rd, maybe better, in a fleet of 5 groups of absolutely
insane characters. All in all, not too bad for not having
sailed since last September.
Besides the above corrections I'd like to see happen is to
bring along a _very_ big radiant heater or a fireplace, or at
least even warmer clothes than I had.
Next race is in about 4 weeks. Let you know how badly I
get frozen on that one. Yep, for some even crazier reason,
I intend to do it again.
... My worst day sailing was better than my best day working!
