Hi Dave:
I also fly fish and tie my own flies. I'd be happy to give
you some help. I have been fly fishing for over forty years
and tying flies for about fifteen years. I started fly
fishing at a very young age (@8) and never went back to
drowning worms or dragging jewelry across the water... ;-)
What species are you fishing for? I tie flies mostly for
brook trout and atlantic salmon.
To start, you will need a vice, hooks, thread, a bobbin, head
cement, dubbing wax (I like Overton's Wonder Wax) and material
(floss, tinsel, and hackle). Knowing what species you wish to
catch and the flies that they are likely to take will help.
Starting with some basic patterns and not trying to tie too
many different patterns will keep your costs lower. You will
probably be able to pick up some materials free, ie: leftover
yarn, deer hair (although you might wish to purchase some that
has been cured), etc.
Give me some more information...
