And in my experience a lot of the complaining came from field personnel,
fire, private, 3rd service, that just could not put up with the lousy
practices by the management, and cheapness of the funding agencies. I
know a lot of good men and women who stuck with it during terrible
times, complaining all the way, sometimes in public, in order to improve
the system. It is the rare instance where a member of the public
complains about service in general. They will complain if THEIR
ambulance is late, but by and large they think that it is an individual
situation, and are unaware of the problems within the system. It is
dedicated individuals, working alone or in concert, some of whom
sacrificed their careers that have made modern EMS as good as it is.
Certainly not the politicians, managers, administrators, or others who
are there to take the credit when things go well. I include in the list
of DOERS some very dedicated MDs that could have made big bucks in
private practice, but choose instead to buck the hierarchy and agitate
for better pre hospital personnel and equipment. Their name is legion,
and we all owe them a huge debt of gratitude. Chances are we will not
see their names in the big national journals, but they were, and are
still out there every damn day, fighting to keep the systems going, and
improve them.
