August,
IMHO, yes it is. I am 76 years old and have never lived in a home
without gas service. The normal procedure is to take action at the
first hint of smelling gas. The only time I know of trouble occurring
is when a leak develops while someone is away on vacation or when the
house is closed for a protracted period. If one smells gas on opening
the door, it should be left open, and the person should go to another
telephone and call the fire department and then the gas company in
that order.
At 98% of the homes in this area are gas equipped, and in all my
years, I can recall about three cases of gas exposions which destroyed
property.
