Hi, James! Recently you wrote in a message to Ardith Hinton:

Uh-huh. And there are three other lobes which also form part of
the cerebrum. I warned you the cerebrum was complex, didn't I?? [Grin].
JB> and the left and right hemispheres compose the cerebrum?
Seems to me most... if not all... of the human brain is divided
into hemispheres, with the possible exception of the brain stem. So when I
tell you there are four lobes altogether that means four in each of the two
hemispheres.
JB> (I know the frontal lobe is actually plural, in how
JB> it spans the two hemispheres.)
Yes, there's one on the left & one on the right.... :-)
JB> These three parts would constitute the "grey matter"
JB> we see right under the skull bone, right?
The *outer surface layer of the cerebral cortex* is composed of
grey matter. I think that's what you'd see right under the skull bone.
:-)
JB> I take it she woke up to discover the trouble then?
I take it your godmother did. It was our wedding anniversary
& we'd just had a rather leisurely dinner in a restaurant with a friend
of the family. Nora had been with other people earlier in the day, and when
Dallas & I went to collect her we both noticed that part of her face
was drooping a bit. Although we noticed different parts they were on the
same side... and we were told she'd stumbled & fallen at about 11:00 AM
but seemed to be fine afterwards. Maybe if my father hadn't had a similar
stroke & we had no other clues to go by we would have taken longer to
figure it out. As it was, Dallas & I & our friend all had the same
thought right away. In terms of when Nora's stroke was deemed to have
occurred, however... we were probably in the restaurant for close to two
hours. And counting from the time the first symptom was noticed, it was
probably eight hours before we got her to the hospital. If your godmother
was asleep when her stroke occurred I guess the timing would also have been
difficult to determine.
