NASA'S OFFICE OF EDUCATION AT STENNIS SEEKS
STUDENTS FOR SHARP PROGRAM

HANCOCK COUNTY, Miss. - The NASA Office of External Affairs, Education
Office at the John C. Stennis Space Center is accepting student
applications for this year's NASA Summer High School Apprenticeship
Research Program (SHARP).

SHARP is a NASA-sponsored, research-based mentoring program for
students who excel in mathematics, engineering, science and
technology. The program provides students in underrepresented
categories an opportunity to build career paths in these disciplines.

This year, NASA SHARP is composed of two components: commuter,
formerly SHARP, and residential, formerly SHARP PLUS. The NASA SHARP
commuter component is conducted at 13 participating NASA field
installations, and the NASA SHARP residential component is conducted
at universities throughout the United States.

To be eligible for the commuter component, a student must be a U.S.
citizen, at least 16 years of age by the start of the program in June
and a permanent resident in accordance with state residency
requirements. The student must attend a school within a 50-mile radius
of the participating NASA field installation and be available on a
full-time basis for the duration of the program. Eligibility
requirements for the residential component are that the student be a
U.S. citizen and at least 16 years of age by the start of the program
in June.

For both components, students must have completed at least two college
preparatory courses in mathematics and science with a "B" average in
each and an overall "B" in other coursework. Students must demonstrate
an interest in and aptitude for careers in math, engineering, science
or technology and be willing to participate in an interview as part of
the placement process if chosen as a finalist.

Applications have been mailed to area schools. Students interested in
participating should contact their school guidance counselors.
Deadline for applications is March 10.
