1)  Cold War and and Ice Warrior, great double entrendre.

2) A Soviet professor into decadent music,
   great Idea Gattis.

3)  Bringing back the Ice Warriors into contemporary time.  

Genius.

4)  Conflict and mistrust as soon as the Doctor turns up,

common theme.

5) NATO exercises, who will Blink?

6) Intertwine that with an Ice Warrior Grand Marshall.

The end does work well with the stand off.

Yes Gatiss intertwining nostalgia and history work well.
