I really recommend riding lessons. The more I learn the more I enjoy
my horses and the more we can do and the safer I am while we do it.
Besides that with the right teacher they are fun.

You can also check at your local feed stores. They usually have a
bulletin board with things like that on it. Go and watch the teacher a
few times if you can to make sure that he/she is the kind of person you
can like and respect. There are some teachers that I think are entirely
to rough on both horse and rider. With the right teacher both you and
the horse feel good about yourselves.

I had dreamed about owning a horse since I was old enough to say horse
but had to wait till my kids were grown to get one. I'm not real
particular about breed, or color. I am particular about size though.
I don't like riding small horses. You can't put your leg on most of
them.
