Naturally, that's what they WOULD say!  
I'm no expert on vinyl siding, but I do remember that they had a few problems 
in the past with fading with the darker colours.  (I especially remember 
problems with blue.)  It's probably a good be to stay away from anything 
dark, even if they say it's fine.
In your position, I would find out how long each company has been around, and 
determine EXACTLY what the warranty is on each one.  I would do this for the 
contractor AND the siding manufacturer.
