 Er, don't you count making a living as a legit reason?  You can play
 progressive music and starve, or play progressive and not give up your
 day job, or perhaps broaden your audience appeal, *not* starve making
 music for a living, and be labelled a sell-out.  It's almost impossible
 to make music with no compromises and make a decent living, especially
 if you've gotten a bit older and acquired a family to support.
 And I can't help wondering how many old time prog outfits are still
 around, ekeing out a living on the tour circuit, because they simply
 don't know how to do anything else.
