Dear Richard:
RG> Went cycling yesterday for three hour and a half. I had the flu all
RG> week and thought it would clean the guck out of my luugs. Well it
RG> did, but I didn't feel better after the ride and instead had a
RG> cough. Decided not to go cycling today. It hurts since this has to
RG> be one of the nices weekends in a long while.
Listen to your body. If you have a horrible flu, go to bed and rest. This
is the voice of experience talking.
Last year, I was training for a 100 mile ride. I was following a training
program published in one of the cycling magazines and started to get
terrible headaches. Needless to say, stupidity ruled and I just kept
riding (up to 40 km before breakfast, that sort of thing). Eventually, I
had to go for a massage and some chiropractic work for what I had assumed
was the stress that was causing the headaches. After I got home, I felt
much more relaxed but still had pain in my head. I concluded that maybe I
was sick. I took my temperature and found it was 102F (about 40C?). At
this point, I stopped riding and took a half-day off work. I also took a
trip in to the doctor to make sure it wasn't something more serious. I
felt better in a few days but could have avoided a lot of pain by taking a
break sooner and listening to what my body was telling me. Eventually, it
got too cold to continue in the mornings and I abandoned my goal.
Seeya,
Steve
