I grew up in the '60s with a .410. Was a real nice gun (Winchester pump
M42). However, I grew up in duck country, & it was a little light on
ducks. Unless he's only going to be shooting dove & quail, I'd suggest a
20 ga. He can use light-loads till he gets older, which won't be long.
Geese were almost out of the question! A 20ga offer a chance to graduate
to buckshot & slugs, & without having to buy another shotgun.
You can get buchshot & slugs for .410, but they are pretty shy of lead.
