AWL> - bans echo of encrypted messages (through normal channels)

PE> Only via netmail. Use echomail, which is what we were
PE> discussing.

AWL> I've seen it applied to echomail. I believe this is one of the areas where
AWL> echomail is treated as "just another type" of netmail under P4...

The moderator of an echo can do what he likes, either ban it or
allow it.

AWL> - requires ZMH mailer

PE> Yes, this requires people to be more technically serious.
PE> Just become a point if you don't like that. So what?

AWL> I can go ZMH on a second line tomorrow, except I can't afford it. I can

Do it on your first line.

AWL> overcome the purely technical problems by rebuilding the garden shed,
AWL> connecting power and phone, and hiring someone for an hour every day or
AWL> two to deal with mail problems when I'm too crook. Should only set me back
AWL> about $4k upfront plus about $1kpa for wages...

What a crock of shit. All you need to do is run Binkley and make
sure it will ACCEPT FTS-1 mail at 4-5AM. You aren't even obliged
to read the mail. People go on holidays for weeks. Computers run
themselves you dork. You could even use an XT with a 300 bps modem,
and get a $20 timer that switches it on at 4AM and off at 5AM. I
know you've already got an XT. I paid $25 for a 2400 bps modem a
short time ago (with the caveat that I originally thought it was a
fully working 1200 bps modem, but it turned out to be a 2400 with
a bust power supply). Do you want me to hunt around for a 300 bps
modem for you?

AWL> Fido-in-general
AWL> - nets defined geographically

PE> Big whoop.

AWL> I'm looking at that from the viewpoint of mailmoving in geographically
AWL> complex OtherNets...

Like I say, big whoop.

PE> So, why don't you start up your own wanknet then if you
PE> hate fidonet so much. All the people who agree that
PE> fidonet's rules are bad will be rushing in droves to your
PE> new net.

AWL> If I had say $20k plus $10kpa, I'd do so. In order to coimpete with

Absolute crap, you can set up your network with an XT and a 300 bps
modem.

AWL> Fight-o-net I'd need to be able to offer as wide a hub structure, as many

For starters, you don't need to compete with Fidonet.

AWL> and varied echos and a whole bunch of other stuff which keeps people using
AWL> Fido in spite of problems with the assortment of loonies who seem to
AWL> infest Fido like fleas...

Secondly, you can get the mail as a point and feed it into your
wanknet if you want. No-one's going to stop you. Feeding mail
back the other way you may find that the moderator will
restrict you. Depends on the echo. I don't mind it for
PUBLIC_DOMAIN, and I doubt Rod will stop you if you want to do
it for AUST_AVTECH.

PE> theirs. And actually, I made a mistake, it should only cost
PE> about $400/year at present internet traffic mail rates.

AWL> That's what it would cost *you* where you live. We don't have the luxury

No, that's what it would cost *you* to keep Michael Butler's
system running. If you cover his excess costs (excess to what
he is currently paying without operating the gate), he may well
start up again.

AWL> of cheap access to the Internet here. Anyway, MB wasn't running *his*
AWL> gateway, he was running FidoNet's Z3 gateway... Not the same thing at
AWL> all...

It's his gateway unless someone wants to challenge his authority
to run the Z3 gateway. Why don't you challenge him? All you need
is a permanently connected internet feed. BFN. Paul.
