Hi, Joanie,
Your name seems very familiar -- was there and article by or about you in
Bird Talk? Are you perhaps the owner of the Amazon that lived to be 109 (I
can't remember his name...) and his buddy Crystal?
We have all sorts of birds, small to large. Including 17 species of conures.
We have Goffins, Grays, Macaws, Amazons. We are up to our eyeballs in Macaw
babies right now. I have 3 3+ mo/olds and 6 1 m/o's plus 2 unrelated 3 1/2
/o
Red Bellied macaws (waiting to be sexed) and three more in the nests! We just
sold our very first ever Amazon babies, Blue fronts. They are about 5 w/o.
Thry go to W. Va this week unless another heat wave comes through to prevent
shipping.
We live in Green Cove Springs, Fl. That is North Fl. We are able to leave our
birds outside year-round, as the winters here are considerably milder htan
yours. We panic if it gets down into the 40's or 30's and you'd find us
outside at 11 p.m. tacking up plastic by light of clip lamp and moon. We had
the storm of the century about 2 years ago and we actually had snow and the
temp went below zero with the wind chill factor. We were without electric for
two days. The winds blew big walk in flights over. But I think the only thing
we lost were some lovebirds that didnt' know they could still eat even if it
was kinda dark. We do string up clip lamps with heat bulbs or light bulbs for
heat if we feel someone needs some warmth.
Do you know anything about "nape subspecies? I'm wondering which my male nape
Elton is. He's large, over 500 gms, and has the yellow-crowned stripe on his
forehead, but has a small yellow"nape" at the back of his neck too.
Thanks!
Barbara Taylor Howell (other handle=Rowenna)
