I didn't respond because you mentioned the solution (write more than one
byte at a time) in the complaint.

Screen writes are slow (one byte at a time) because accessing the video
buffer requires loading protected-mode selectors (a _very_ slow cpu
operation),  as opposed to real-mode segments.

When done properly,  an OS/2 text based program can be as fast as a DOS
program -- even faster with a few tricks (but this takes a redesign).
