Andrew Grillet (On 18 May 97) was expounding to Bob Moylan
AG> Hi Bob,
Howdy...
BM> The only thing that spanking a child, with or without ADD/ADHD
BM> accomplishes is to show that child that if you are bigger and
BM> stronger than someone else you can get usually get away with
BM> inflicting physical pain.
AG> It certainly teaches that, but that is not the only thing that
AG> is taught, if the smacking is used consistently and in specific
AG> contexts.
AG> As Pavlov showed, the brain is capable of association.
Welll.... the so called "normal" child might make this abstract
association depending on his/her age. However, the child with
ADD/ADHD will not simply because by the time any _punishment_ is
meted out the transgression has been forgotten.
AG> torture the cat, he will probably asssociate torturing the cat
AG> with slapped wrists. Of course, he may also associate cats and
AG> parents with slapped wrists too.
Yes there is always that .. then you have a child who is afraid of
his/her parent(s); never a good situation.
... Help stamp out eliminate and abolish redundancy!
