Yoo Hoo, John!
On June 1st '97 you wrote to Carol and me:

JG> While I am on the horn here, I do have two questions:

JG> 1 - Is talking about Disney movies and tapes now OK?
We will allow discussion of Disney movies and tapes to resume -- HOWEVER,
not the buying and selling of these here on the Disney echo.
FidoNet is set up as a noncommercial network, and no discussion of
trading or selling of Disney materials should take place here.
JG> 2. Once in a while, maybe twice a year, I used to post a list of movies
JG> I had available in response to messages from people looking for certain
JG> Disney movies for themselves or their families. Those messages seemed
JG> to be okay,
Please do not post messages such as that. If you see a message which
you would like to respond to with information you have about trading or
selling Disney videos or Disneyana of any kind, please take it to private
e-mail or go to the Internet where there are discussion areas set up for
Disneyana buying/selling/trading.
Another alternative is to post classified ads in your local newspaper.
From Carol, Co-Moderator: Here's part of the rationale behind this
part of "The Rules": It's been my observation that anything looking/
sounding/smelling like a "classified ad"-type Disney posting, however
well-intentioned...
...Tends to proliferate like wildfire and choke off the readability
of a conference where people can't or don't necessarily take the time
to isolate and "kill" those threads and subjects they do not care to read.
One person posts, another sees it and thinks it's OK to do likewise,
someone else does too, and eventually the conference is more "for sale"
type stuff and doesn't exchange news, opinions and helfulness like it
used to. We've been on Fidonet and Internet for five years, trust me,
this _does_ happen. We're trying to see that it doesn't happen here
and that the purpose for which this Echo was set up, discussion, is
preserved.
...There is no way anyone can see/hear/examine any item offered
"for sale" to determine the quality, value, and legitimacy of it or
of the person offering the item. There is a great potential here
for fraud that works both ways (people not sending the merchandise
someone else is paying for, people not sending in payment for
merchandise offered) and in case of fraud investigation can affect
unwitting BBS sysops and area coordinators and moderators of Fidonet.
Not pointing fingers at anyone, mind you. :-)
...As we saw with the other thread, differences of opinion even about
Disney material merchandise can vary and set off flame fests.
As mentioned, there are established ways of offering Disney memorabilia
for sale. The National Fantasy Fan Club (as mentioned in another
message in this thread), classified ads in newspapers, attending
Disneyana conventions, Usenet newsgroups involving the trading of
Disney memorabilia. Try pursuing these. :-) --Carol
From Rich: And getting Internet access is easy and not expensive
today. Why, with the profit from a good sale of Disneyana merchandise,
one could "buy" an Internet account. :-)
