PM> ROTT has the Mercury wings, the elevator pads, the rounded stairs,
PM> and the flying transport things. Not to mention what happens if you
PM> fly off into space. Gives me vertigo -Duke3D doesn't do that, nor
PM> Descent.
JF> But how many of those actually affect the essence of gameplay?
All of 'em since they're all features :)
JF> A well-designed Doom level (or nowadays, Duke or Quake level) can
JF> overcome anything ROTT can put out.
WRONG! Doom could not match some of the cool stuff ROTT could do (I still
ike
Doom better overall but that's beside the point). Those transport pads were
really cool, there was a level with a set of them travelling all around the
sky (there was a little maze in the middle with lots of cool weapons, can't
remember the name), if you were carefull you could stay on them and look down
across the whole level (if you stayed on long enough) it was very fun aiming
down and firing at your friend from above and before he knows what's going on
you've travelled of on a platform, NOTHING in Doom could match that, or lot's
of the other things I liked about ROTT.
PM> Funny how the ROTT enemies can actually shoot straight, though. The
PM> guys in Doom just kinda stand around. The demons... well... the
PM> grenade throwers in ROTT seem a lot more dangerous.
JF> But what about the enemies of Doom II? The Mancubus and Revenant
JF> are deadly against most anything. And let's not forget the classic
JF> bosses, the Cyberdemon (a true terror) and the Spiderdemon.
So? None of those were any smarter, they STILL couldn't shoot straight, but
they had stronger weapons and therefore a larger error margin, tricking
monsters
in Doom is easy because the AI isn't all that good.
JF> And the environment in Quake, at least, is tenfold better-looking,
JF> scarier and more immersive than in ROTT. For that matter, same for
JF> Doom.
Quake is comparable to ROTT and Doom only in the same way Doom is comparable
to Wolf3D, there is a huge difference in time between the two and you would
expect it to be a lot more realistic.
