I've had IBM AntiVirus installed as my first-line defense since early
this year, and have been pleased with what I can see of the way it oper-
ates and with the frequency and ease up updates.
Just did another update today, and it occurred to me that I was updating
the files on the hard drive, but had done nothing about updating the
"Desktop Emergency Disk" that came with IBMAV and is intended as a means
of recovering from virus attacks that prevent the computer from booting
from the hard drive. Upon investigation, I found...
a. The "User's Guide" and the READMEEA.TXT file tell how to made new
or duplicate emergency diskettes from the original program diskettes
or CD-ROM, but are completely silent about updating the diskette
files.
b. A newly-created emergency diskette contained the same virus data
files as the original one, yet also contains the same EXPIRE.MSG file
that is supposed to be triggered when the virus data files are seven
months old.
I'm going to experiment with manually replacing the old SHSIG.LST,
VERV.VDB and VIRSIG.LST files with updated ones, but would like to
know if anyone else has grappled with this (presumed) problem. Perhaps
I'm being too simplistic, but it seems to me that if you are in a
situation where you have to use the emergency diskette, it should have
the latest virus data on it.
Has anyone raised this question with IBM? Am I missing some simple
explanation buried in the documenation or that should be obvious?
