My best guess that the a\d and d\a convertors inside the ave-5 are not 
linear when it sees the signal it interpolates where it thinks the dark areas 
are. I am not familiar with this model but its brother the WJ-MX12 has the 
same problem which can be minimized but never eliminated. Sometimes we call 
this pick of the chips.
