I wouldn't consider avoiding a police investigation "paranoid".
Currently, if Kleck et al surveyed me, I would respond, because I
don't have any DGU in my past (just one defensive knife use, for which
the police decided to release me).  

If I did have a DGU in my past, which had not already come to the
attention of law enforcement, I would question the interviewer closely
to be sure they're not hostile law enforcement before answering
truthfully.
