   It sounds like the following feature which I found described in the =
online help

  Automatic software updates
  IntelliPoint software periodically checks for software updates when an =
Internet connection is detected. If an update is available, a =
notification dialog box appears giving you the option to update the =
software and to turn off the automatic update feature.

  Note
  If you do not want to be automatically notified of software updates, =
you can visit the Microsoft Mouse Web site periodically to see if = updates
are available.
