True, but I think the human brain is pretty well equipped to catch
missing words. Provided it's not too stressed, zonked out, etc.

It is pretty colloquial for a polished nonfiction piece. However, in a
folksy sort of piece, where the writer is kind of chatting with the
reader, I think it would fit it.
