04-17-05 00:36, Ardith Hinton told James Bradley about -Plegias 2A.
How do, Ardith?
JB> the camaraderie. /-:
AH> Uh-huh. One of the reasons we started this echo
AH> was that we saw people going home to small communities
AH> where there was nobody else who had experienced what they
AH> had... and we felt an alternative meeting place might be
AH> useful. :-)
There you go!
Another thing you might have imagined about me, is my persistent bitching
about the lack of services available to people in my situation has spawned
numerous new phone numbers and policies meant to deal with the next
grumpy-Gus to come along. Now, if I can only convince someone to give me
free cable, roadside assistance, and a cell phone my life will be complete.
JB> two broken forearms. Both of us daredevils!
AH> It doesn't surprise me to hear that about you... [chuckle].
[-|{
JB> wagon, onto the same hill, and busted up his other arm!
AH> I wonder about such individuals... but then I tend
AH> to do the same thing with words & ideas. Sometimes I get
AH> hurt. And sometimes I find folks like you whom I wouldn't
AH> have met otherwise. Nothing ventured, nothing gained....
AH> :-))
To pull back the physical example, I never avoided the bike after that
incident, and I suspect you don't avoid parlaying ideas because someone
belittles one of them. Who hasn't hatched a hair-brained scheme now and
again, or run their bicycle off on a path they couldn't control? You get
up, you dust off, take stock of what you can do to keep the bike on-path
(The best you can. |-) next time, and you go on. Otherwise, you go nowhere.
AH> within the same hemisphere.
AH> [...]
JB> Ah, right. I forget where I got the notion of the opposite
JB> hemisphere... Likely from another affliction.
AH> Maybe. Or maybe it's because, generally speaking,
AH> the right hemisphere controls the left side & vice versa.
AH> People often find that confusing.... :-)
Pretty amazing, isn't it? All but sight holds true to that crossed wiring I
believe.
JB> I couldn't imagine the road you're on, but I'm sure
JB> you want to encourage any progress possible.
AH> Yes. Although you haven't experienced this particular
AH> condition... and although you may find the medical details confusing
AH> sometimes... you've grasped the important part. *You
AH> understand what we're trying to accomplish*. I don't know
AH> how much Nora will recover, but I think it's important to
AH> make the effort.
...You dust yourself off, take stock of your resources, and you get back on
the bike.
AH> I'll use an analogy with dogs here because I suspect that
AH> (unlike those who regard canines as inferior beings) you'll see the
AH> similarities between them & us. I've heard it said that
AH> dogs understand very little English apart from a few simple
AH> commands like "sit" & "stay", for
example... but I've also
AH> read some research results indicating they understand about
AH> as much as the average three- year-old. Lady... a Great
AH> Pyrenees who shared our home years ago... understood "I
AH> have to get up at seven o'clock to take my insulin" well
AH> enough to insist on waking a visitor at the appointed hour
AH> even though he wasn't talking to her. I always spoke to
AH> Lady as I would to a child, however, on the theory that
AH> neither dogs nor humans understand English well if they
AH> have nobody to teach them. :-)
Boy, did I have to defend my position once. I told a couple
that I thought every parent should first own a dog. I stopped suggesting
that, as it's likely a lot of couples are expecting a child *before* they
have time to train a dog.
JB> OT, + PT?
AH> Occupational therapist & physiotherapist. They
AH> specialize in different aspects of recovery from strokes
AH> etc., and work together in such cases.... :-)
Ah... Thanks.
