Ah hah! So maybe hanging on the tree prompted the growth, with 
enough sunlight penetrating the (thin?) skin to start 
photosynthesis, and with the fruit being rushed by truck to me, 
maybe the three or four days in isolation wasn't enough to kill 
the shoots.
