I've never known a dedicated addict to need money for his or her drug of
choice.  I never, ever paid for my own alcohol when I drank it years
ago.  At that time I was a lot thinner and also a lot more agile, could
dance the night away and did many times.  The drinks were supplied by
others.
The skid row chronic drunks in Seattle manage to find a way to obtain
enough of something daily to maintain their blood alcohol level to a
desirable state for them also.

Yup.  They have the disease concept, that the alcoholism exists BEFORE
the alcohol is consumed, DURING the consumption, and lasts long AFTER
the consumption of the alcohol.  This was begun by those in Alcoholics
Anonymous around 60 years ago and the good doctors who assisted Bill
Wilson and Dr. Bob.  Those numbered one of the leading psychiatrists in
the City of New York at the time as well as Karl (Carl ? ) Jueng, the
famous European psychiatrist who did not fully agree with Sigmund Freud.
For some 30 years the professionals around here in the field of chemical
dependency (treatment of addicts) have been looking for a definitive
physical test that could be administered to children at birth to
determine which of them is at risk to be recognized as an alcoholic if
he or she begins to consume alcohol.
We are getting closer.  In the search, many things have been discovered
and much more will be learned after the completion of the Human Genome
Project.
In the meantime, we know that addiction is a family problem, and that
the children of alcoholics are at risk to either develop the disease
themselves, or to pass on the genetic traits to their own children.
Canada is also well aware of all of this.
