I don't expect that to be a difference. Maybe you have your machine =
configured to automatically connect. Look at the Connections tab of the =
Internet Options dialog.

Then again... she has to enter a password... I don't. I wonder, since =
her machine offers an Administrator ID, mine doesn't (all I can click is =
my own ID at startup)... could that be the thing? If so, I wonder if =
clearing the password is poosible and would change the problem?

PPPoE is one of the variants that I thought expected a connection =
to be made. If the DSL modem doesn't make it, I think that Windows = would.

No, it's a PPPoE connection. It's the exact same as the setup I =
have on this machine Same ISP (for the next 24 hours...)

The ethernet interface should work that way.

It sounds like you created a PPP or VPN connection. Some DSL =
modems work this way and require the client computer to establish the =
connection. This is in contrast to some modems which establish the ISP =
connection on their own and expose an ethernet interface to the client.

Windows XP will automatically log in the user when there is =
one account other than Administrator and Guest and that account has no =
password. It doesn't automatically log in accounts with a password. = The
mechanism to support doing this, which was present in earlier = Windows
releases, may still exist. I never used it myself so I don't = know if
it's still around.

I've set up a zillion network and internet connections on =
Windows. I set
another up today, but this one acts differently, and I'm =
baffled.

The machine has Windows XP Professional. It's on a friend's =
PC. It doesn't
have SP1 on it yet. The ISP (SBC/Yahoo- WARNING! Avoid them!!! =
IDIOTS!
IDIOTS!) was no help since I wasn't using their "Clog yous =
system with crap"
          install.

I used the XP connections wizard, as I have on my XP machines =
here, and it
went about creating the connection as normal, but instead of =
creating the
connection where when she starts the machine it is =
automatically connected
to the internet whenever she "signs" in, she has to clink the =
icon on the
desktop and start up like a modem session. I recreated the =
connection 3
times and it made no difference.

I followed the same process I used every time I created a =
session on my
other machines, and I don't know WHAT is different.

I have to have missed something very obvious here. Any =
pointers here?

Also, what am I overlooking that causes her to have to enter a =
password to
get to the desktop when she boots? She didn't have to until I =
had her change
the password on her machine after she dumped her boyfriend, =
then it started
making her enter the password. Again, I'm missing something =
because I looked
and couldn't figure out what I was missing.

          Thanks...
