 How many former republican congressmen can you recall? How many
 who left office ten years ago? How many who were not involved in
 some sort of scandal? We remember John Glenn because he was an
 astronaut. We remember McGovern and Mondale because they were
 candidates for President. That won't last a generation. Who ran
 against FDR? I remember Adlai Stevenson, but who among the
 current generation does?

 Everett Dirksen was a giant in his time. He was one of the
 leaders in getting the Civil Rights act passed. How many
 remember him?

 Unless there is really something significant about a public
 figure, they are forgotten rather quickly. Dashle was a
 congressional leader, but where was he, or Hastert, or any other
 leader really significant? Publically so. Unless they continue
 in the public eye, who will remember?

 After all, Bob Dole went to doing commercials watching Brittany
 Spears on TV. He was a presidential candidate and a major figure
 in congress.
