I do not know whether this matters, but 1917 was when the USA entered=20
the war.

As to WWI, Emperor Karl tried to negotiate a separate peace, and, when=20
that failed, he was effectively forced to abdicate. So, at the end of=20
the war, the Austrian Republic claimed to be at two removes from Franz=20
Joseph, and the Allies accepted this.

As to WWII, after the Anschlu=DF, technically, Austria didn't exist.
