| subject: | HPFS386 on Devcon 8? |
PF> HPFS386 really won't do anything for your local machine (except for PF> security) -- its performance features are for remote PF> users (in many cases, unlike regular hpfs, hpfs386 PF> can serv a network request at ring 0, without having PF> to switch up to ring 3). I still don't agree with your assessment on this for computers with lots of RAM (i.e., 32MB RAM or more) and fast CPU chips (Pentium or faster). For instance, a Pentium with 64MB RAM being used for heavy disk I/O can probably benefit from the larger than 2MB cache size available with HPFS386. Also, a bit of benchmarking I did several months ago suggested that for some tests HPFS386 can be faster (around 30-40% faster) than HPFS even with the same cache sizes. This may have something to do with Pentium optimizations present in HPFS386 versions from LS4.0 and later. As always, results will vary from machine to machine and from user to user. --- Maximus/2 2.02* Origin: OS/2 Connection {at} Mira Mesa, CA (1:202/354) SEEN-BY: 50/99 270/101 620/243 711/401 409 410 413 430 808 809 934 955 SEEN-BY: 712/407 515 517 628 713/888 800/1 7877/2809 @PATH: 202/354 300 777 3615/50 396/1 270/101 712/515 711/808 809 934 |
