 Usually, I build a custom-sized "crate" out of discarded cardboard 
 I can pick up from a local furniture store, rigid styrofoam, and sometimes
 1"x1" wood stiffeners down the long sides of the crate - it takes about
 3-4 hours just to pack the birds so they will survive UPS.

 If the trip is over 400 miles (200 miles round-trip each way) I gently 
 decline the contract - that is, unless I can develop some great need to
 make the delivery.
 Keep after the boat building - success finally arrives, although it
